Background of the study
Religious ceremonies in Efik communities are imbued with rich symbolism that plays a crucial role in maintaining cultural identity and spiritual beliefs. In Cross River State, Efik religious ceremonies incorporate language as a symbolic tool to convey sacred meanings, moral values, and ancestral wisdom. Ritualistic speeches, hymns, and prayers are carefully crafted using the Efik language to preserve tradition and communicate divine messages (Udo, 2023). Translators and religious leaders rely on specific linguistic conventions and symbolic expressions that resonate with the community’s historical experiences and cultural heritage. However, modern influences and language shift pose challenges to preserving these symbolic expressions, risking the erosion of cultural memory. This study examines how language symbolism is employed in Efik religious ceremonies by analyzing ritual texts, observing ceremonies, and interviewing religious practitioners. The goal is to determine the effectiveness of current practices in maintaining cultural symbolism and to propose strategies for reinforcing the symbolic power of the Efik language in religious contexts (Anyanwu, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite its importance, language symbolism in Efik religious ceremonies faces challenges due to modernization and shifting language practices. Inconsistent use of traditional expressions and the influence of global language trends can dilute the symbolic messages conveyed during rituals (Udo, 2023). This study aims to identify the key factors undermining language symbolism and to propose measures that will strengthen the cultural and spiritual impact of Efik religious ceremonies (Anyanwu, 2024).
